STOP, IDENTIFY, HAZARDS

Toxicodendron radicans
With the trip across the Wild & Wonderful (thankful that it's no longer Open for Business) state of West Virginia, there are some safety tips that must be considered. Be able to identify poisonous plants and animals. One plant that is found throughout WV is poison ivy, which causes an inflammatory response from the immune system. Texas.gov offers a fact sheet that describes poison ivy, oak, and sumac.

Berries that turn white when mature
Other than poisonous plants one needs to watch for  snakes also. There are only two king of poisonous snakes in West Virginia: Northern Copperhead and the Timber Rattlesnake. Majority of snake bites come about because of people that try to handle the snake. Remember that snakes are more afraid of you than you are a afraid of them. Marshall University Herpetology Department offers a great site that identifies snakes and offers pictures.
