This is a scale measurement that can be used by a forester or a novice enthusiast to estimate board foot. I actually remember using this in my ecology class to determine the board foot and the level of biomass within an ecosystem. Even though using this instrument is not as accurate as using a diameter tape and a clinometer, it would still be an interesting experiment to test the validity. An interesting history behind this instrument is that it is named for the Biltmore estate near Asheville, North Carolina. This is the birthplace of forestry in which the goal was to preserve the forest.
